To recap, this semester I edited 4 Wikipedia articles: Boston Red Sox , General Electric, Polar Bears, and Maine. I hope that my additions have been useful, and some of them are still on the wiki edits which is good. The wiki articles I chose were pretty big and comprehensive. A ton of information was already on there, and I knew that I would not be able to make substantial additions. So instead, my goal for my edits was to add information that some may call trivial, or I like to think 'fun facts' because it's this type of stuff you don't hear about every day. For example, I noted that Maine happens to be the largest producer of blueberries in the country, and that Mt. Katahdin is the first place in the U.S. that sees sunlight each morning.

In addition, I tried to add links and sources where people can find additional information that the wiki site doesn't cover, and that I can't lay out in my own words. For the Red Sox site I added a link to Sons of Sam Horn, website, a site dedicated to "everything Red Sox." It is a great site, one that any New England Sox fan like myself, knows about or has heard about. My favorite link addition was on the Polar Bears wiki site. I added a link to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge site. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, located in Alaska, is home to thousands of polar bears. The reason I added the link is because there is a huge debate going on right now about whether or not the U.S. should drill domestically for oil there. I will keep my personal beliefs on the matter closed, however whatever decision is made, there is sure to be an effect on the polar bears. It is an issue first raised in an economics class Sophomore year, and then again in a communications class. This link was not only relevant and useful to people looking for information on polar bears, but for me it sort of tied a piece of my college course work together.

In conclusion, I hope my wiki edits have been useful and enjoyed by other people surfing the wiki world. I have finally taken one out of my team mates playbook and added a picture. The picture is of Maine (one of my wiki edits) and that lighthouse, Portland Headlight, is 5 minutes from my house. One last little 'fun fact:' that is the most photographed lighthouse in the world, and it's right there in Maine.

Team Mates Blog's

I would like to take this opportunity to say that my team mates blogs look fantastic. At DuPont, he heads a marketing team, and spoke to us about the innovative ways they stay ahead of the marketing curve. It's good to see that it's not only the younger generations that are recognizing the value of new communication tools such as text messaging, facebook/myspace and podcasts. I thought he really reiterated what we have been discussing all semester, and what I feel is a theme of our course, that being "marketing is becoming increasingly conversational." It was very interesting how he has used text message marketing at trade shows to alert customers about new products and help create buzz.

Red Sox wiki edit

Made another edit to the Red Sox Wiki Site . For the Polar Bears aritcle, I added a link to the Polar Bear Provincial Park wiki article, an active and worthwhile region for polarbears. To the Red Sox aritcle, i added a blurb about the dimensions of Fenway Park Prior to the Ted Williams era. My GE article , a tough one to edit, I added a book title written by Jack Welch, an interesting book for anyone perusing information about GE. Loocsixela, Loocsixela, Loocsixela...maybe this will help me win the prize.

Open Source Marketing

Today in class we had a SKYPE presentation by a fellow named James Cheykoff. He discussed with us the ideas of open source marketing; basically how companies are asking there customers for their own input to create cheap marketing plans. It is all very interesting, and one thing I found especially interesting is that GE a company that I make a wiki edit about weekly or so is using this technique.

Did not follow Google's example...

Recently, I created a post praising Google for their firm stand on not allowing the US Government access to their data files to obtain information on their consumers' searches.

While looking through some ClickZ articles recently, I came accross one concerning the website know as freeipods.com. I will not provide a link to this article, as you can read why in this ClickZ Article. Freeipods.com, especially to the younger generations, is a commonly understood deal. You sign up for certain promotional activities, maybe a subscription that costs you a dollar, and if you get other people to do it, I believe 4 of your friends, you get a free ipod. For awhile, it was the craze of email and Instant Messaging away messages. "click here to get me a free ipod" was a common plea by many. I never did it, and it turns out that was a good move.

Apparently, the operator of that website has been selling his customer's information, information he said would be kept confidential, to other companies. Now he's being sued. Too bad freeipods.com did not follow Google's example on this one. Just another reason why I feel Google is leading the way, not only in their technologies, but in their tech values as our internet world continues to expand and become more open to people trying to make a buck.

...Not until nearly done with this post did I notice my teammate Brian Corcoran also posted about this article. Good to see that we are thinking along the same lines. Anyway, you can access the article through both of our blogs.

Google's Victory

I was perusing John Batelle's Searchblog and noted a post he made talking about Google's recent victory with the department of justice. I had seen it in the news earlier in the week, and meant to post about it then.
I am very happy to see that Google has won this battle. Government needs to be restricted on how much control they have over individuals, states, and corporations in the U.S. Demanding Google to hand over information that one, violates their values concerning customer privacy, and two, could severly hamper their current advantage they have over their industry as far as search engine tech. goes, way over steps government's role. Not only that, it is a violation of the U.S. Constitution protecting individuals' rights.
I applaud Google for not being intimidated by the governement on this one. It would have been very easy for Google in the wake of corporate scandals, and Google's recent successes to comply with the governments request and be pressured into avoiding controversy. I feel that corporations and small businesses alike should follow Google's lead and challenge the government not only on privacy issues, but corporate and business tax rates, and regulations as well.

GE Wiki Edit and Google Search Extra Credit

This evening I made an edit to the General Electric wikipedia article. The reason I picked GE as one of my wiki articles is because this winter I traveled abroad to Europe and toured a GE plant in Budapest, Hungary. I was the "liason" for GE and was responsible for providing my peers with background information on the company prior to the visit. GE is truely an amazing company, and as you can tell by getting further detail from the General Electric wiki article, some of their innovations and their diversity within their field are astounding. While I was at the GE plant, I learned of several awards they won over the years and I added those to the Wiki article. Check it out.
Also, If you google myself (Erik Joncas) my blog comes up first or second. Not too shabby and that's worth extra credit points.

Sons of Sam Horn

Sons of Sam Horn is a website deticated to everything Red Sox. Here, you have the option of becoming a member, and participating in discussions concerning the most recent Sox news, or rumors which are constatntly ina big to do among Boston sports fans. You can also just register for free, and view recent chat postings or interesting commentary concerning the state of Red Sox Nation, as it has come to be called.

I especially like the site because it gives you flavor of what it is really like to be a Boston Sports Fan. Only New York really rivals the spirit and passion that Northerner's have, especially Red Sox fans. It is really a different type of fan base, full of know-it-alls and people that want to be involved in it all. I added it to the external links section of the Red Sox Wikipedia article . I came accross a very interesting article concerning the chainging "connectivity" of teens and the way it is effecting their lifestyles. I think it is very interesting because advancements in internet and mobile technology has come accross a lot of criticism for some say it causes teens to "veg-out" too much. Some people claim that such techonology even takes a lot of the thinking out of many tasks. However, this article points out the opposite. It argues that because of the internet and other techonologies, teens have become far more involved in the world, more knowledgable about world affairs, and has pushed many to become activists, arguing for what they believe in. Anyway, you should check out the article. Also some relevant marketing information and how these technologies have caused major companies to alter their marketing tactics.

Jumping on My Teamates Skype praise

Two of my class team mates, Rebecca Jones and Brian Corcoran have recently commented on the effectiveness and usefullness of Skype in their blogs. Although I don't know I'd go as far to say, skype is one of the most amazing things I've dealt with in a classroom," I would agree that it is extremely evolutionary. In a business world where globablization is booming, Skype just makes communication easier, more effective. Like other innovations before it such as email and Instant Messaging, Skype takes down even more communication barriers, and does so in a cost effectove way.
I would check out this Skype article from business week online. I recently had seen a Discovery channel special on these fascinating animals, and learned about some of their hunting tactics and instincts. The original Wiki article pointed out that seals usually only catch about 5% of the seals they go for, but failed to mention how they actually do it which is the coolest part. So I added a solid paragraph as to part of this process.
